Redefining the Limits in Rehab and Sports Training

Alter-G Anti-Gravitational Treadmill
For Physical Therapy

The AlterG anti-gravity treadmill contains NASA patented technology that allows you to reduce your body weight by as much as 80%. Military, professional sports teams, universities and leading medical facilities across the nation all use AlterG treadmills. The Anti-Gravity Treadmill helps a broad spectrum of people – top level athletes, orthopaedic and neurologic patients, pediatric, geriatric, and those looking to lose weight or to achieve their personal health and performance goals!

How Does it Work?

AlterG treadmills offer an unique unweighting process utilizing a differential air pressure technique that NASA developed. The original use was to help astronauts exercise and maintain conditioning while in space. The air pressure comfortably lifts the user and allows him/her to walk or run at a fraction of their body weight.

Benefits of the Alter-G

  • Rehabilitate lower extremity injuries with less pain and less impact
  • Provide support and confidence to start walking sooner and longer
  • Prevent falls during training to increase comfort and confidence during rehab and beyond
  • Develop and maintain aerobic fitness while rehabilitating from injury or surgery
  • Improve mobility, strength, and safety for those with neurological conditions such as traumatic brain injury (TBI) and stroke
  • Help children with injuries or developmental disorders train their legs to walk or even run
  • Allow for neuromuscular re-education in a fall safe environment
  • Provide a safe way to lose weight and exercise more intensely while unweighted
  • Push athletic and endurance training sessions further and longer with less risk of injury

Seniors & Neurological

When recovering from a stroke or struggling with a neurological disorder, patients are often afraid of falling. Seniors with osteoporosis are at an even greater risk, since a short fall can break bones. The AlterG offers a unique fall-safe environment and is great for long-term care and treatment. Once a user is zipped into the chassis, it is virtually impossible to fall out of the AlterG. As the AlterG activates and the unweighting process lifts the user, it becomes easier and easier to walk. There are many convenient and solid handholds that the user can grab at any time they feel off balance.

Walking naturally is an important part of recovering from a stroke or traumatic brain injury, and the sooner the better. The AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill enables the user to start balancing exercises and walking sooner than with traditional rehab technologies. With the AlterG doing most of the weight-bearing work, users can focus on muscle coordination in a low-impact environment without fear of falling. Neurological patients are able to walk longer and more comfortably. The result of neurological rehabilitation with the AlterG is greater progress when practicing skills needed for standing and walking.

The AlterG has been used for the following:

Orthopaedic & Sports

AlterG treadmills allow patients to rehab from a lower extremity injury or surgery with less pain. Allowing for early weight-bearing exercises without the risk of injury to the healing tissue, the AlterG is ideal for joint rehab.  The AlterG assists in correcting gait mechanics and promoting a normal range of motion by reducing the demand on the affected joint.

Athletes of all sports and ages find the AlterG to be ideal. The AlterG creates a low impact, pain-free environment that allows athletes to increase their training volume, decrease downtime, and reduce the likelihood of training injuries that will cause a delay in getting back to their sport. The athlete can then return to their sport sooner and in better condition.

Lower body conditions that benefit from the use of the AlterG:

  • Total Hip or Total Knee Replacements
  • Meniscectomy (Meniscus Repair)
  • ACL Reconstruction
  • Achilles
  • Bunionectomy
  • Arthritis (OA, RA)
  • Stress Fractures
  • Ankle Sprains

Pediatrics

The AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill makes pediatric physical therapy fun and engaging to help children recover the strength and mobility they need to get back to the fun of being a kid. It helps children get mobile before their legs are strong enough or coordinated enough to support them normally. Therapy on the AlterG builds strength and muscle memory. It can be used in therapy for children with spina bifida, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, movement and gait dysfunction, brain injuries, post-surgical rehab and more. Best of all, there are no skinned knees with the AlterG, because it is a fall-safe environment.

Weight Loss

Excess body weight can put a lot of stress on an individual’s hips, knees, and feet. This stress can make exercise painful. In a vicious cycle, the pain reduces the ability to effectively exercise, which leads to more weight gain and more stress on the joints. Does this sound familiar?
